Curating the Virtual

Η έκθεση Curating the Virtual συλλέγει έργα που επιδεικνύουν μη-συμβατικές προθέσεις. Μεταξύ άλλων χαρακτηρίζονται απο προσπάθειες άρθρωσης κάτι συγκεκριμένα Κυπριακού. Δημιουργούνται εκτός των εγκατεστημένων οδών παρουσίασης και κατανομής. Καταφεύγουν στο διαδίκτυο όπου συναντούν απρόβλεπτα ακροατήρια και άλλους τρόπους ιδρυματοποίησης. Η έκθεση προτείνει το διαδίκτυο ως γόνιμο χώρο φιλοξενίας δημιουργικών στοιχείων τα οποία τεκμηριώνονται στα περιθώρια.

Curating the Virtual selects works which exhibit non-conventional intent. Among other things, they attempt to articulate elusive Cypriot elements. They are created outside the established routes of presentation and distribution so they reside on the net where they encounter unpredictable audiences and other modes of institutionalisation. The exhibition puts forward the internet as a fertile venue for creative attitudes as these are documented in the margins.

The following works were retrieved by Chrystalleni Loizidou on 11.01.2008 and inserted in the Nicosia Municipal Art Center. The exhibition was undertaken within the context of the Research Team’s work on the Archive Project, May 2007 – January 2008.

Curating the Virtual picks online works out of their nuanced surroundings and it challenges them to hold their own in a contemporary art space. Most of these works neither want nor need to be in a gallery. Gathering them there is an unecessary abstraction. But it is also a number of other things. It is an illustratation of how Cypriot users place, frame and present Cypriot identity, culture and nature on the net and a juxtaposition of the above with creative outlooks by foreign residents and tourists on the same topics. At the same time it is an unvailing of overlooked Cypriot cultural production, a suggestion of the net as a valid venue for art and occasionally an attempt to induce laughter.

Η έκθεση "Curating the Virtual" προκαλεί έργα του διαδικτύου να ανταποκριθούν στις απαιτήσεις ενός κοινού σύγχρονης τέχνης. Τα περισσότερα από αυτά δεν έχουν ανάγκη την γκαλερί. Η σύναξη τους είναι ένα μάλλον αχρείαστο πείραμα αφαίρεσης. Είναι όμως και πολλά άλλα πράγματα: Είναι παρουσίαση του πως Κύπριοι διαδικτυακοί παραγωγοί τοποθετούν, πλαισιώνουν και παρουσιάζουν την Κυπριακή ταυτότητα, κουλτούρα και φύση στο διαδίκτυο και σύγκριση των πιο πάνω με δουλειές ξένων κατοίκων και τουριστών πάνω στα ίδια θέματα. Ταυτόχρονα ξεσκεπάζει παραβλεπόμενες πτυχές κυπριακής πολιτιστικής παραγωγής και θίγει αισθητικά και άλλα διαδικτυακά ιδιώματα. Περιστασιακά, η έκθεση μπορεί να προκαλέσει και γέλιο.
